Citation Guide - MLA9

Citing Images

IB Requirements: Although MLA rules say otherwise, the IB clearly ask that all sources cited in-text be included in the Works Cited list. Please therefore cite the image in the Works Cited list even if it is cited in full in your caption.

Students are expected to cite images. All images should have a citation that clearly gives the image details and information about where the image came from (its 'source').  Students should also only use images if they have a meaningful function.

Here are the directions to properly attribute an image:

  1. Under the image write the label "Fig." Fig is short for figure.
  2. Each image should be given a number. The first image will be 'Fig. 1', the second 'Fig. 2' etc.
  3. Each image needs a caption giving the image details. These details usually include the image creator (if know), title (or descriptive title if the title is not known), date of creation (if known), and source information. The source information can be brief or written out in full, however, in both instances it should clearly link to the full citation in the works cited list.

In the text of the project or paper, place a parenthesis at the end of the line where the figure is discussed, and include the label.

Example
Blah blah blah (fig. 1).

Dodo

Fig. 1. Christian Friedrich StölzelDodo. Circa 1792. Wikimedia Commons, commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dodo_stoelzel.jpg. Accessed 13 Mar. 2023.

The following caption would have also been acceptable: Fig. 1. Christian Friedrich Stölzel, Dodo, circa 1792.
