Citation Guide - MLA9

Digital Files (PDFs, MP3s, JPEGs)

End the entry with the name of the digital format (e.g., PDF download, JPEG file, Microsoft Word file, MP3).

If you found the file online your citation should have two parts, the first part providing the information for the digital file (author, title, date etc.) and the second part giving the information for the website, database or archive from which you downloaded the file. At the end of the citation include the digital format (e.g., PDF download, JPEG file, Microsoft Word file, MP3). For example:

Dee, Daphne. Report on the impact of Recession on UK Public Library Use. British Library Association, 2020. Library Facts, 2021, www.libraryfacts.org/Resources. PDF download. Accessed 20 Jan. 2021.

If the file was given to you directly (i.e. by your teacher) just provide the file information. If you were linked directly to the file include the URL in the citation. For example:

Presley, Elliot. “High Tea: An Ode to the Cucumber Sandwich.” 2010. Microsoft Word file.

Report of the Impact of Pollution on Sea Horses. Marine Life review, 2012, www.marinelifereview.org/content/download/2232323575438/1164362.pdf.

If the work does not follow traditional parameters for citation, give the author’s name, the name of the work, the date of creation, and the location.
