Quoting from Chinese Sources

If you are writing in English and quoting from a Chinese language source you should provide a translation in addition to the original Chinese characters (MLA Handbook 281).You should also include information about the source of the translation (281). If you are referring to people, places or organizations in your text these should usually be transliterated (284).

Translating a Chinese source for an English language paper
Template Text introducing the quote "Quote written in Chinese characters surrounded by double quotation marks" 'English language translation of the quote surrounded by single quotation marks' (source of quote; source of translation).
Example The tones of loss and lingering affection are clear in the lines, “轻轻的我走了,正如我轻轻的来” ‘Very quietly I take my leave, as quietly as I came here' (Xu 23; my trans.).

If the translation comes from a book or website this should be included in the in-text citation, in parenthesis:

  1. Cite the source of the original quote in Chinese characters
  2. Followed by a semi-colon
  3. Cite the source of the translation

Both sources should be cited in full in the works cited list. If you made the translation yourself you should indicate this by writing 'my trans.' - this is short for 'my translation.'
